Manganese and mixed hardness

Greenleaf runs four active wells at three sites, all inside city limits, and treats the water by disinfection. The city's 2025 report says its well water is high in manganese. It lists the Butler well at 0.104 mg/L manganese and 51 mg/L hardness, and the Harmony well at 0.257 mg/L manganese and 167 mg/L hardness. The city says it knows of no violations in 2025.

Manganese isn't regulated in drinking water nationally, and Idaho hasn't adopted a state standard for it. The city says water over the 0.05 mg/L secondary standard can taste metallic, stain fixtures and come out discolored. If your hot water runs darker than your cold, flushing the tank is a good first step.

Homes

Mostly houses, mostly electric

The median Greenleaf home was built in 1979. About 18% are older than 1940 and about 20% date from 2000 or later. About 85% are detached houses and about 7% are mobile homes. Electricity heats about 53% of homes, gas about 39%, and wood about 7%. NOAA's nearby Parma station averages about 144 freezing nights a year.

The city's water report asks customers with a boiler or radiant heater to contact City Hall for a cross-connection survey. It says plain water heaters aren't included.

Permits

State plumbing permits, county landfill

A June 2025 city memo says Greenleaf issues its own building permits, but permits and inspections for plumbing, electrical and HVAC work come from the State of Idaho through DOPL. City Hall is at 208-454-0552.

The city bills garbage collection with water and sewer. For an old tank, Canyon County's Pickles Butte landfill, at 15500 Missouri Ave. south of Nampa, is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call the scale house at 208-466-7288 first.
