What we see

Common water heater problems in Ohio

Sediment and noisy tanks. Popping and rumbling are common in tanks that have never been flushed. On a tank under 8 years old, a flush and inspection is usually worth it.

Suburban basements in Delaware and Franklin counties. Many homes in Westerville, Hilliard and Reynoldsburg have 40 or 50 gallon gas tanks in finished basements, so a leak there can do real damage fast.

Electric heaters in newer builds. Some newer suburban homes and townhomes run electric tanks. A tripped reset button or a failed element is the usual no-hot-water cause.

Winter

Central Ohio winters are cloudy and cold, with January lows in the low 20s.

Water

Central Ohio water is moderately hard to hard, so sediment builds steadily.

Before the plumber arrives

  1. Leaking? Close the cold water valve on top of the tank.
  2. Turn off the gas valve or the breaker.
  3. Smell gas? Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
Why winter is hard on heaters

Cold water in, more work for your heater

When the ground freezes, the water coming into the tank can be 40°F or colder. Your heater runs longer for every shower, and a worn thermocouple, element or sediment-packed tank is often the first thing to quit in Ohio.

Questions

Ohio water heater questions

Which towns do you cover in Ohio?

We cover the Columbus suburbs, including Delaware, Powell, Lewis Center, Westerville, Hilliard and nearby towns. Call and we'll check your address.

Why do water heaters fail more in winter?

Colder incoming water makes the heater run longer and harder. Weak parts and sediment-packed tanks tend to fail during the first cold weeks.

Is it worth repairing an old water heater?

If the tank leaks, or it is about 10 or more years old and needs a big repair, replacement is usually the better value. A younger heater with one failed part is usually worth fixing.
