Water emergency

Brown water, and keeping it out of your tank

The town declared a water supply emergency in December 2025 because of reduced well production and elevated iron, manganese and PFAS, and it bans nonessential outdoor water use for as long as the emergency lasts. Its 2025 water report says samples from Well 10B on Plymouth Street topped the state's manganese advisory level three times that year, and the town offered free drinking water from a vending unit at 151 High Street. On October 21, 2026, it began bringing a new Plymouth Street treatment facility online to treat Wells 10A and 10B for PFAS, iron and manganese.

The town warned that bringing the facility online could cause temporary discoloration, and its instructions protect your heater. Run a cold faucet for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the water is completely clear. Don't run hot water or wash white laundry until the cold lines run clear. If it doesn't clear, call the Water Department at 508-697-0910. If the cold runs clear but the hot stays brown, sediment may have reached the tank, and a plumber can flush it.

Treatment

Nine wells, two older treatment plants

Bridgewater's water comes from nine wells in three aquifers in the Taunton River Basin, 40 to 60 feet deep in sand and gravel. The High Street plant, online since February 2023, and the Carvers Pond plant both remove iron and manganese. The town adds sodium hydroxide at every well to reduce the groundwater's natural acidity, which it says helps limit wear on household plumbing. The report lists hardness at 80.5 mg/L in a February 2023 sample, and the water reaches homes through about 130 miles of mains.

About 39% of Bridgewater homes heat with gas, 37% with oil and 15% with electricity, and Eversource lists Bridgewater among its gas towns. The median home was built in 1984, and about 24% of households rent. In a house heated by oil, ask the plumber whether your hot water comes from a separate tank or from the boiler, because that changes the repair.

Permits

Online permits, and a triple fee if you skip one

Bridgewater handles plumbing and gas permits through its online system, and a paper application costs an extra $50. The 2026 fee schedule lists $70 for a water heater as the only fixture on a plumbing permit and $70 on a gas permit. An electric water heater is $75 and also needs a wiring permit. A re-inspection is $75, and failing to apply for a permit now costs triple the fee, up from double.

The town says a permit card must be in hand before any work begins. If the fire department or the gas company calls an inspector out after hours, the emergency inspection fee is $75 an hour with a four-hour minimum. State rules require a permit before plumbing or gas work is installed, replaced or repaired, and the licensed plumber or gas fitter pulls it.

Before the plumber arrives

  2. Turn off the gas valve or the breaker for the heater.
