Brown water

Why Pembroke's water turns brown

Pembroke runs four active wells with three treatment facilities and about 135 miles of water main. The Hobomock and Bryantville wells need treatment to remove high levels of iron and manganese, and all the wells get potassium hydroxide to raise the pH and cut corrosion. Even so, in 2025 iron tested as high as 753 ppb and manganese as high as 197 ppb, both above their aesthetic limits. The town says discoloration during flushing comes mainly from iron deposits inside its ductile iron mains, and that the water is safe to use, though it can stain laundry.

Residents told NBC10 Boston in January 2025 that brown water shows up far more often than the twice-yearly flushing. The water superintendent called it an aesthetic concern, not a health concern, and said fixing the sources will take years and a lot of money. The department presented a $75 million improvement plan in December 2024, and the town has added an online form for reporting discolored water.

Your heater

Keeping that sediment out of the tank

Iron and manganese that get into the house settle at the bottom of a water heater. Over time that layer can cause rumbling, discolored hot water and less hot water than you're used to. In a town with frequent brown water, flushing the tank once or twice a year is worth doing. If only the hot side runs rusty while the cold is clear, the tank itself may be rusting, and that's worth a look.

The town's flushing page warns that flushing causes discolored water in varying degrees in every section of town. Its advice: check before doing laundry, then open the outside faucet closest to the water meter and run it for several minutes. If it still isn't clear, wait about an hour and try again. If you have a water softener, put it into regeneration once flushing in your area is done. Clearing the lines with cold water first keeps the stirred-up iron out of your water heater.

Homes

Oil, gas and private wells

About 52% of Pembroke homes heat with gas, 32% with oil and 5% with propane. In an oil-heated home, hot water often comes from the boiler through a coil or an indirect tank, so tell the plumber what you have. Gas comes from Eversource. About 90% of homes are owner-occupied, and the median home was built in 1974.

Not every home is on town water. Pembroke's Board of Health regulates private wells, and a well can send its own iron and sediment into a heater. For a water problem after town hours, the water department says to call the police non-emergency line, 781-293-6363. State rules require a permit before plumbing or gas work is installed, replaced or repaired, and the licensed plumber or gas fitter pulls it.

Before the plumber arrives

Safe steps for Pembroke homes

  1. Leaking? Close the cold water valve on top of the tank.
  2. Turn off the gas valve or the breaker for the heater.
  3. Gas smell? Eversource serves Pembroke. Leave the house, call 911 from outside, then report it to Eversource's gas emergency line.

Questions

Pembroke water heater questions

Who is the gas company in Pembroke, MA?

The state's gas provider map lists Eversource for Pembroke. If you smell gas, leave first and call 911 from outside, then report it to Eversource.

Is Pembroke's brown water safe?

The town says discolored water from flushing is safe to use, though it can stain laundry. The water superintendent has called it an aesthetic concern, not a health concern.

What should I do when my water turns brown?

Open the outside faucet closest to the meter, or a cold tap, and run it several minutes. If it's still not clear, wait about an hour and repeat. Using cold keeps the sediment out of your water heater.

Can brown water hurt my water heater?

Not right away, but the iron and manganese settle at the bottom of the tank. Over time that can cause rumbling and discolored hot water, so flush the tank regularly.
