Softened, but still hard

Springfield's treatment plant draws from 12 wells in the Mad River Valley Buried Aquifer. The city's 2025 report says the raw well water averages 346.6 mg/L of hardness, or 20.23 grains per gallon, and after softening it averages 147 mg/L, or 8.60 grains. The city still calls its water hard, and notes that hard water helps protect pipes from leaching lead.

For a water heater, 8.6 grains is enough to build up scale on the bottom of a tank or on electric elements over time. Draining a few gallons from the tank once a year helps. The water plant's number is 937-525-5880.

Lead lines

Inventory and repair help

The city posts its service line inventory online, and the Service Department at 937-525-5800 takes updates. The city says its water supply is lead-free but some older homes still have lead lines. Lines have a public side, owned by the city, and a private side, owned by the homeowner. If you replace your side, the city is required to replace its side too, and its assistance program covers up to 50% of the private replacement, up to $1,500 per property.
