City water

A water plant that turned 100

The city marked 100 years since the building of its water treatment plant on December 30, 2024. MORPC's regional water plan says Westerville draws from Alum Creek below the Alum Creek Reservoir and uses wells to supplement it. The city says it softens the water to about 125 mg/L, or 7 grains per gallon.

Softened water is easier on a water heater than raw hard water, but some sediment still builds up. A rumbling tank usually means it's time for a flush.

1970s homes

Older homes, later heaters

The median Westerville home was built in 1982, and about 46% date from before 1980. A house that age has likely replaced its water heater more than once. Older shutoff valves, connectors and venting are worth checking whenever the heater is repaired or replaced.

Fuel

Gas, with plenty of electric

About 71% of Westerville homes heat with gas and 27% with electricity. If your electric heater gives some hot water that runs out fast, the lower element is the usual suspect. If a gas heater's pilot won't stay lit, the thermocouple is often the cause.

Before the plumber arrives
