Five wells and a greensand plant

The Norton Water Department's FAQ says the town's water comes from five gravel-packed wells on Pine Street, Plain Street and Newland Street. The three largest feed a treatment plant on Plain Street, where greensand filters remove naturally occurring iron and manganese. The town says manganese above 50 micrograms per liter can discolor water and make it taste bad.

In a notice sent in January 2025, the department reported manganese of 0.43 to 0.51 mg/L at Well 1 from October to December 2024, above the state's 0.30 mg/L advisory level. Wells 1 and 3 aren't filtered and run only when demand calls for them, and Well 1's water is blended and makes up no more than 15% of an average day's supply. Questions go to the water department at 508-285-0282.

Wells

Private wells and home sales

The Norton Board of Health requires every private well to be tested at the time of a real estate transfer, and the seller must give the town the well's location and test results. It suggests testing for drinking water quality, nitrate and arsenic every year, and volatile organics every three years. The Board of Health is at 72 East Main Street, 508-285-0263.

Hot water

Keep the tank at 120 degrees

The water department's FAQ links green stains in sinks and tubs to copper, which very hot water can make worse, and advises keeping your water heater at no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the setting in your owner's manual or ask a plumber. The town also doesn't allow automatic sprinklers on the municipal water system.

About 53% of Norton homes heat with gas, 28% with oil and 10% with electricity. The state's gas provider map lists Eversource for Norton. About 84% of homes are owner-occupied, and the median home was built in 1982.

Permits

Permit fees and inspections

Norton's fee schedule charges $50 per unit to replace a hot water heater, covering both the plumbing and gas permits. Inspection requests have to go to the inspector in writing at least 24 hours ahead.
